Shipka 6
Sofia, Bulgaria

The aim of the competition proposal is the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the existing building of the Union of Bulgarian Artists into a contemporary, multi-functional space for exhibition, administration, office, education, gastronomy, retail and leisure uses.

The existing building stands in a special urban setting. It is in striking proximity to public buildings and city parks. Due to its size, it occupies a special position within the district. The building features identical facades on all four sides, creating an abstract and sculptural impression, creating an interesting contrast to the surrounding historic buildings. The upcoming renovation offers the opportunity to improve the above-mentioned qualities and to maintain the building’s appropriate status in the city.

Thanks to the surrounding abstract vertical structure, the new façade refers to the original facade. The outstanding identifying feature is the material – gold-coloured anodized aluminium – which achieves a corresponding signalling effect and gives a stronger visual presence. The facade consists of full-surface glazing with cantilevered offset pilasters in four different shapes, allowing flexible redesign of the interior for future reuse. The external shading reduces the cooling requirement and provides the necessary illumination of the main zones. It prevents direct sunlight and glare from backlighting from affecting the exhibition rooms.

The entrance and ground floor areas are planned as open spaces to appear as inviting as possible and thus illustrate the cultural significance of the building in public space. Inside, functions such as reception, foyer, hall, café, and bookstore are combined in a single open space.

The existing staircase serves as the main access to the upper floors. A second staircase/elevator core serves as an additional structural escape route and as access to the external rental space on the upper floors without having to cross the exhibition rooms. The exhibition areas can be flexibly arranged with movable walls. The ceiling construction remains open, and all installations are visible and can be redesigned at any time. The rough character of the industrial concrete construction creates an ideal framework for the exhibits.

The additional roof floor enhances the urban proposition and offers exhibition space with ideal lighting conditions. While the standard floors are more suitable for hosting exhibitions with a temporary experimental character due to the side light, the upper floor is suitable for exhibitions with a museum character. The restaurant has a roof terrace, which is an ideal addition for exhibition openings or other events.
