House EM
Kichevo, Bulgaria

Located twenty minutes from the Black Sea coast, the single-family house seeks the intersection between the complex requirements of modern living and the idea of a relaxed life near the sea. It is from here that the concept of a silhouette of a house from a child’s drawing was inspired – a two-dimensional projection of two walls with a triangular roof and a chimney, the depth of which is left to our imagination.

The depth that develops in the north-south direction is determined not only by the characteristics of the site, but also by the idea of avoiding the strong radiation of the summer sun. Thus, the living area is oriented to the north, with a view of the wide crop fields of the village of Kichevo, and the night tract – to the east and south. In this way, the living quarters remain protected from the heavy western sun. The support functions are concentrated in a central core with a dual function – on the one hand it plays the role of a wall between the corridor, bedrooms and bathrooms, and on the other – a series of storage, technical and wardrobe spaces necessary for the needs of the household.

The materiality of the building reinforces the simplicity of the concept where form and function meet. The external walls and roof form a protective shell of waterproof concrete that is patinated by the elements. The construction enables precise and energy-efficient finishing in the form of highly insulated drywall construction, which greatly limits the “wet” processes in the interior and exterior finishing work.

The continuation of the rectangular gutters outside the contours of the building turns them into a horizontal accent, reinforcing the idea of the extruded two-dimensional projection.
